Kindle Canada Ebooks
Supported Formats and Format Conversions
Official Kindle Canada ebooks format is AZW. This base on Mobipocket standard Format, with slightly different in serial number scheme ( it uses an asterisk instead of a dollar sign ) and its own DRM formatting. This is the Disadvantage of Kindle Canada that is not an opened device and does not support a wide variety of other ebook formats. However, there are few options for getting around this for non-DRM files.
For DRM Formatting encrypted files, Kindle Canada supports Official Amazon Kindle format: AZW. For Unencrypted files Kindle Canada supports PDF, TXT, MOBI, and PRC. In addition, Kindle Canada will convert these unencrypted files to their AZW format: PDF, HTML, DOC, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MOBI, and PRC.
For Canada Kindle Users who want to convert these files on your own, I recommend Free Conversion Software such as MobiPocket Creator and Calibre. With Calibre you can also convert unprotected EPUB ebooks downloaded from various sources like Google Books to Kindle Canada compatibly ebooks format.

The Infamous “Free eBook List” as Compiled by Richard ‘Davros’ Halsall

Your first port of call for free books will probably be Amazon’s free 100 list, where you will find many of the classics of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

and

You can also find free books, more up-to-date, under the specific subjects. To do this, select the the subject/genre/author you are interested in and then change the Sort by (on the right side of the page) to PRICE: Low to High. You might also want to put 4 stars or above reviews (on the left of the book list) and that weeds out some of the really dreadful ones!
After you have investigated Amazon’s offerings, you might want to try these sites:-

You can either download from above sites using your Kindle or your computer. If using the Kindle, you have to be connected to a Wi-Fi network or are using 3G, you to go to the Web Browser (Home > Experimental) then if you go to kinstant.com this will take you a site that will give you the Kindle friendly sites.
For example, if downloading from gutenberg.com/ebooks you can actually download them straight from the gutenberg site to your Kindle device.
Once you have found the book you are interested in, scroll to the line that says Download Kindle and click the centre button of your D-pad. A window then pops up that asks “Download filenamehere.mobi? Once the file download is complete, the file will appear in your home screen. Are you sure you want to proceed? No Yes”
Click on the “Yes” option. A Window will appear saying “Web Browser successfully downloaded filenamehere.mobi.”
If you then check your homescreen it should be there. Once you have finished downloading all the books you are interested in, do not forget to turn off the wireless when done!
The above works for free when you are hooked up via Wi-Fi. I have not tried it using the 3G on my device. so be aware that there may be charges (to your CC on file with amazon) associated with the download from gutenberg. If you do this via 3G then can you please either of us know if you try it on 3G how it turns out.
If you do not have Wi-Fi available you can also download the books to your P.C. and then transfer them to your Kindle. Once you have download the book(s) to your computer you will need to transfer the book(s) to your Kindle. To do this:-
1. Connect the USB cable to your computer and kindle. If you are using Windows you should get a box pop up asking you what you want to do. Choose open folder.
2. Locate the book on your computer (it should be wherever your browser usually downloads files to),
3. Copy the downloaded file (book) to the DOCUMENT folder on the Kindle drive.
4. After the transfer is complete, go to MY COMPUTER, right-click on the Kindle drive and go to safely remove.
hxxp://www.mobileread.com/ is a message board for ereader owners. They have a Kindle forum with many sticky threads full of useful information and links. They also have a separate Calibre forum. It might be worth you looking to see whether there is anything of interest on there.
Another useful message board is hxxp://www.kindleboards.com/
Once you have downloaded and read the freebies, you might like to try this site:-

There has been a plethora of book borrowing/lending sites that have suddenly appeared since Amazon introduced the borrowing/lending facility. I am sure that _some_ of these sites are legit. I, however, would be wary of borrowing from strangers. If nothing else, you are giving your E-Mail address to a perfect stranger. If you do want to do this, you might want to think of setting up a throw-away address. The one I use (for sites I have to supply an E-Mail address to and may possibly never go back to) is hxxp://www.mailinator.com/
I would also recommend that you get a program called Calibre. hxxp://calibre-ebook.com/ Amongst other things, Calibre can convert non Kindle (MOBI) files that you might be interested in on one of the above sites, and other sites (as long as they are non-DRM’d), and it will allow you to convert them into a format (MOBI) that the Kindle natively accepts.
Mobipocket Reader hxxp://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailsreader.asp is another program that you can use to read ebooks on your computer and other devices. Mobipocket Creator will convert non Kindle format books into MOBI compatible files.
For those worried about the above sites, all sites have been checked by the members of this group. I do not even list any sites that ask for a monthly subscription, or you have to pay to join, as I do not consider those books to be free.
Although I have put this document together, it could not have been done without the continuing help of the patrons of this (Amazon Kindle) group. As such, I want this to be a furthering collaborative effort. If anyone knows of any sites that I have missed then please let me know [Richard (Davros) Halsall], and I will investigate them before adding them to the list.
Thanks to Árni Viðar Björgvinsso, Joanne Perry, Elizabeth Trudgeon Brown, Jessica Kupillas Hartung and others for the links. Thanks to Jennie Hunt for reminding me about the 4 stars. I would also like to thank Melanie Schultz Ruoff and Mary S Roper who regularly posts this on my behalf, if I am not about.
The Major problems of Kindle Canada ebooks is that it isn’t an open device and doesn’t support a wide variety of ebook formats. However, there are a few options for getting around this for non-DRM files.
For DRM encrypted files, the Kindle International Canada supports Amazon’s proprietary format: AZW. For unencrypted files it supports PDF, TXT, MOBI, and PRC. In addition, Amazon will convert these unencrypted files to their AZW format: PDF, HTML, DOC (Word), RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, MOBI, and PRC.
You can choose to convert these files on your own with free conversion software like MobiPocket Creator and Calibre.
These Two software are widely known and use for Canadian Kindle Users !!!
My Kindle Canada have a Toronto address and I have not had many issues.
I am able to buy books from the Amazon USA site.
I have had some issues with most non-book offers – like games or applications – all were denied ’cause of the Canadian address.
I subscribe to a Pixel of Ink daily email of FREE books on Amazon.com (not .ca) and I am happy to report I am able to get the free books from them. They have a decent selection of free contemporary books and classics.
I also send myself some PDFs – using my Kindle email address. Some of those PDFs are textbooks and I read them in landscape mode – as the font is fixed and bigger that way and tables are easier to read… These now show up in your Personal Doc folder on the Amazon cloud – quite handy.
Hello, Canadian Ereader Users
For the one who have problems of purchase Kindle ebooks that only available to download in US, Not in Canada.
You Can try add a US address to your “Manage Your Kindle” profile and select it to use US Amazon account and That will enable you for all US Kindle ebooks downloads. I try this and it’s work well, Hope you like this
I live in Quebec, how do I get Canadian Library books loaded in my kindle touch?
If your library has Mobipocket format books, then you can use two readily available scripts, which give you a Mobipocket-style PID for your Kindle to enter on the library website, and modify the resulting downloaded file very slightly to “trick” the Kindle into acknowledging the .prc file when you load it up.
If your library has ePub/PDF books, they will be ADE-DRM-ed, and you will have to break and strip the DRM and convert the ePubs before you can read them on the Kindle. It is not hard, and you can find the tools for doing so in the same place you would find the Mobipocket modification scripts.
Fortunately, this is all still legal in Canada, despite the efforts of our useless sellout Heritage Minister, and if you want to keep it this way, please be sure to write your MP to indicate your opposition to Bill C-32, or any other bills which try to introduce a US-style DMCA which will benefit the corporations down south at the expense of Canadian fair use rights.
Hope this helps, and welcome to Kindle Canada Website
Almost all Kindle publications are in fact offered via Amazon.com, and you may spend within ALL OF US dollars, although because of physical limitation (publishers getting nearby legal rights and thus forth), you will find individual Kindle fire “stores” for every nation plus some publications will never be accessible to North america (and some other publications might be accessible canada and never the actual US).
For Canadian Newspaper on Kindle, You Can get it free by using Calibre.
I use calibre to automatically download at 7:00 AM each morning. Newspaper available included The Globe and Mail, National Post, The Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Toronto Star, The Montreal Gazette, Vancouver Province, Ottawa Citizen, Winnipeg Free Press, Victoria Times Colonist, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Windsor Star, Dilbert comic strip, and TMZ newsfeed. Once a week it downloads Wired and Macleans Magazines …… all are frees, and all are automatically transferred to my Kindle Touch via wireless before I’m out for the work.
But if you want to subscribe it you can go through Amazon.com and selected canada here http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&node=2237604011&tag=clas10sdhc-20&linkCode=ur2&rank=salesrank&camp=1789&brr=1&rd=1&creative=390957#/ref=sr_pg_1?rh=n:133140011,n:!133141011,n:165389011,n:2399045011,n:2237604011
For the one who have problems that some Kindle ebooks doesn’t available in Canada, The solution is to Get New Amazon.com Account that use US address, Not Canadian Address. And you Can download any ebooks on Amazon to your Kindle without problems. But Remember that charge you in US Dollars, So ou must have US Credit Card.
Hey, Luiciana. That’s not totally true.
You can go to the Manage Your Kindle on the Amazon Kindle page, under Your Country have it read “United States”. I have done so, and I have a Canadian shipping address and a Canadian credit card. And I Never have a problem yet.
For Using Amazon Kindle in Canada, There are something i want to know before buying about Kindle ebooks availability in Canada.
Can i buy Kindle eBooks through Amazon.ca or Kobo shop, If a Kindle ebook is not offered on Amazon.ca, Can i buy Kindle eBooks through Amazon.com if i live in Canada?
Hi John,
1. Yes, You can buy Kindle ebooks that sold through Amazon.ca, For the books that unavailable at Amazon.ca you can buy through Amazon.com, and you will pay in US dollars, though due to geographical restriction (publishers having local rights and so forth), there are some ebooks that will not be available to Canada (Mean for the one who sign in Kindle with Canadian account using canadian address not US account) And there is currently a $2 Whispernet charged fees outside the US, which is included in the selling price of the ebooks.
To avoid getting hit on the credit card with a lot of small charges/conversion fees over time, I advise purchasing a medium-large denomination US dollar gift certificate when the exchange rate is favourable and applying it to your Amazon.com account, Or you Can trick buy Using US Amazon account.
2. Yes, You Can buy ebooks from Kobo store, But You have to learn about DRM right and ebooks file format and Conversion. The Most using is Calibre and Mobi-reader. You can learn more by googling that.
